Protect Those Nooks And Crannies

dental sealants White Plains

Cosmetic dentist Ira Handschuh is passionate about the prevention of cavities, which is the foundation for a healthy and beautiful smile. Preventative dentistry – brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings with a dental hygienist – are crucial for keeping your smile bright and free of cavities. There are some places, however, where enamel damage can occur even with dedicated oral hygiene.

The very back of the mouth, where the premolars and molars are, is the most problematic area to brush and floss. Deep pits in molars and spaces between teeth are the perfect environment for tooth decay to flourish. Food and bacteria that is lodged in pits of molars and spaces between teeth create acid that has direct contact with tooth enamel and immediately goes to work.

While brushing frequently is critical, an additional safeguard against dental caries is the application of dental sealants. Dental sealants are a plastic barrier that cosmetic dentist Handschuh can apply. The sealants are placed over the top of each tooth, to impede bacteria and plaque having direct contact with the tooth.

Many White Plains parents obtain sealants for their children and teens, and many adults in the NYC area are having them applied to help fight tooth decay and protect enamel. After sealants are applied, they will be examined at each visit and reapplied as required.

Are they cost effective? Sealants are relatively inexpensive initially and downright cheap when you consider the cost of filling cavities and restorative procedures that may be necessary in the future. Sealants may be the best investment you ever make in your child’s smile.

To maintain a healthy smile, follow these important steps:

Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush that is replaced every few months
Brush with ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste after each meal
Eat a diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and low fat protein sources.
Limit or avoid sugary foods and drinks, especially soda and hard or chewy candy
Visit cosmetic dentist Handschuh at least once a year and have your teeth cleaned and examined
Consider having sealants to help protect the enamel in the hard-to-clean places

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

fix broken tooth White Plains

In a perfect world, each of your priceless teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most New York men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by tooth decay, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to correct minor cosmetic issues – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is often the most reasonably-priced option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of dental caries. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or repair the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. leaves you with more of nature’s prime dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab, they are ordinarily called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are ordinarily smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, strength, and function. A crown is commonly needed for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with extreme decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to prevent further damage. Gum surgery is also handled for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the optimal solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, restrict bone recession, and do not affect the surrounding teeth. For patients with several missing teeth, custom implant-anchored dentures can be designed in any configuration needed.

For more information about any of these procedures, call The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. at 914-574-2558. Thanks for visiting the The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. blog. We appreciate your interest in our White Plains dental practice.

Many lucky White Plains residents who have received smile makeovers at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. believe their dazzling new smile brightens their whole face. Some NYC professionals have corrected tooth problems prior to beginning a search for new employment.

A beautiful smile is essential to a polished appearance. Scarsdale cosmetic dentistry is not just for people in the public eye, it is for anyone who desires a youthful looking smile.

What Is Crown Lengthening?

gummy smile surgery Perfect smiles created at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. often require crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth. Some patients undergo crown lengthening surgery at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. to alter their gummy smile.

A gummy smile refers to upper teeth that appear too short because excess bone and soft tissue covers part of the teeth. When a gummy smile is eliminated, our White Plains patients can’t believe how it changes their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth.

Sometimes, a patient needs crown lengthening because of tooth fracture. When a tooth breaks at the gumline or a crown is fractured, crown lengthening makes tooth structure accessible for the necessary restoration.

Digital imaging is one of the technological tools that helps NYC dental professionals perform crown lengthening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures. When a Scarsdale cosmetic dentist has a highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure, he/she is able to achieve the precision necessary to design smiles to the patient’s exact specifications.

How Can You Improve Your Smile Quickly?

Porcelain Veneers With porcelain veneers, you can revamp your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Porcelain veneers are glass-like, wafer-thin covers that are attached to the front of your teeth. Porcelain has been used in dentistry for many years because no other restorative material is such an excellent match for natural tooth enamel. Porcelain is translucent and can be matched to the color of any tooth. It is stronger than enamel and resists stains.

Dental ceramists who fabricate porcelain veneers are both artists and technicians. They create beautiful paper-thin wafers that adhere to teeth, correcting chips and stains. Porcelain veneers can also straighten crooked teeth for patients who don’t need orthodontic work.

Patients who receive porcelain veneers appreciate the less-invasive process of enhancing their smile. Newer techniques require no removal of healthy tooth enamel.

We would be happy to show you what veneers can do for your smile.

Why Aren’t You Smiling?

NYC Dentistry Hello, I’m cosmetic dentist Ira Handschuh. My dental practice is called The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S.. We are located at 280 Dobbs Ferry Rd Ste 104 in White Plains, and you can reach us by calling 914-574-2558.

You can probably imagine why I look at smiles everywhere I go in the NYC area. Whether I am working with a dental patient, having dinner at my favorite Scarsdale restaurant, or attending a sporting event, I notice whether the people around me smile. Whenever I encounter someone with obvious tooth problems, I want to tell them about the procedures that can completely transform their frown into a healthy and beautiful smile.

Are you one of those people who don’t want to show their teeth? I would love to talk to you about a smile makeover. Whatever your excuse is for not seeking dental treatment, I can discuss all of your concerns with you during a free consultation.

Perhaps you are afraid of dental work. Have you ever considered oral conscious sedation? With sedation dentistry, even extensive treatment is virtually pain free. Sedation will calm your mind as well as the nerves in your mouth.

Perhaps the cost of White Plains cosmetic dentistry is holding you back. My efficient staff will be happy to talk to you about financing plans. It is important to remember that if your teeth are decayed, postponing treatment will cost more money in the long run. Filling a cavity is far more affordable dentistry than a root canal procedure or, in the case of an extracted tooth, a dental implant.

You can contact my office at 914-574-2558 or online at http://www.dentaldesigncenter.com/. My White Plains family dental website contains information about all the general, restorative and aesthetic services we provide.

I can transform your smile into one that you will want to show all the time!

Is Perfect Possible?

Westchester County Cosmetic Dentistry Are you considering a smile makeover? Are you skeptical of promises of a “perfect smile” or a “celebrity smile?” Let’s discuss the most popular cosmetic dental procedures and the results that can be expected.

Composite Veneers
The application of porcelain veneers at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. can remedy multiple aesthetic dental issues and is frequently a better solution than dental bonding.

Veneers can correct chips, cracks, minor tooth misalignment, tooth discoloration, unattractive tooth shape, and disproportionate tooth size. Can a porcelain veneer create a perfect tooth? While a veneer cannot repair a decayed tooth, it can turn an unappealing tooth into an aesthetically perfect tooth.

Tooth Bleaching
Tooth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic dental treatment that dramatically improves a smile. Tooth whitening dentists will guarantee extraordinary results for any patient that craves a whiter smile.

At The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. in White Plains, we only recommend tooth bleaching for patients that are good candidates for the process. If you have several crowns in the front of your mouth, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not brighten your smile.

Call 914-574-2558 to schedule a tooth-whitening consultation.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Would you like to turn back the clock to your pre-filling smile? It is possible with white fillings at The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S.. To get an idea of how the inside of your mouth would look without unattractive metal amalgam fillings, have someone without any fillings open their mouth. Do you remember when your mouth looked like that?

These are just a few of the cosmetic dental solutions that create stunning smiles for our patients. Call us today!

Gritting Your Teeth: Stress And Your Smile

White Plains how stress hurts your teeth

Doctors have been telling us for years that stress can increase the risk of everything from high blood pressure to depression. But how often do we think about how stress impacts our smile? Here are some dental problems linked to stress.

Canker and Cold Sores
Cold sores are a symptom of the herpes simplex virus. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes canker sores but suspect they are related to infection, virus, or a weak immune system. If you are prone to mouth sores, you probably already know that stress seems to bring them on or lengthen healing times. If you frequently get these sores, speak with your doctor or dentist. Your healthcare provider can advise you on medications, diet, and stress reduction techniques.

Teeth Grinding

It’s no surprise that teeth grinding (bruxism) is bad for teeth. It starts with enamel wear, then loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. During this progression, there may be other troubles such as gum recession, headaches, and TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders). If you grind your teeth, it’s critical to address this condition as soon as possible. In addition to stress, there are many factors that can cause or exacerbate bruxism. These include: malocclusion (bad bite), sleep apnea, and prescription depression and anxiety medications.

Your dentist may prescribe an appliance to protect your teeth and keep your jaw in the proper position while you are sleeping. Other treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation therapies, mandibular advancement devices, physical therapy, and medication. Your dentist can create a treatment plan and work with you and your doctor to manage or eliminate this condition.

Temporomandibular Disorders
There are many direct and indirect causes of TMD. For example, inability to manage stress may cause jaw clenching which, in turn, causes pain in the jaw joint. Other symptoms of TMD include tenderness, pain, or swelling in the neck, ear, face, or shoulder; popping or clicking sounds; and changes in bite alignment. Again, if you experience any of these, speak with your dentist.

Gum Disease
Stress can reduce your ability to fight plaque build-up which can cause gum disease.

Oral Hygiene
Some people forget brushing and flossing when life becomes difficult.

Diet
It’s not uncommon for people to consume more sugar, snack more often between meals, or drink more alcoholic beverages when experiencing increased stress. All this at a time when vigilant oral hygiene is often not a person’s first priority!

Tooth pain and untreated dental problems will only give you something else to worry about. Let’s nip this vicious cycle in the bud.

I’m cosmetic dentist Ira Handschuh. If you haven’t seen a dentist in a while and are experiencing an unusually stressful period, I invite you to schedule an appointment with me by calling The Dental Design Center – Ira J. Handschuh, D.D.S. at 914-574-2558. Let’s determine the status of your oral health, schedule treatment if necessary, and create a plan to restore and maintain a healthy smile. My efficient dental team will make you feel relaxed during your stress-free visit to our comfortable White Plains office.

Remember, a healthy smile will give you one less thing to worry about.
