This may sound like an unlikely cause and effect, but research suggests that eating fish with high levels of polyunsaturated fats can lower the risk of gum disease, a condition we see far too often at The Dental Design Center in White Plains.
As you may know, gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. But a study published by the American Dietetic Association showed that people who eat moderate to high amounts of the fatty acid DHA had rates of gum disease that were up to thirty percent lower than those who did not.
Foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids include salmon and nuts. Good sources of PUFAs also include mackerel, herring, and trout, as well as walnuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, and flax oil.
In severe cases of gum disease, gum tissue separates from the teeth. Bacteria can build up in the gap it creates, leading to bone and tooth loss.
Researchers say that diet rich in PUFAs may be a less expensive and safer way to prevent or even treat gum disease.
Treatment for gum disease is available at The Dental Design Center in White Plains. We see people from all over Scarsdale, Westchester County, and New Castle, who also come to us for complete general dentistry. Please schedule an appointment with us today!
